Classification of Economic Activities (EVRK) 2.1 update

The Classification of Economic Activities (EAA Rev.2) is based on the classification prepared by the Statistical Office of the European Union (EUROSTAT), which defines the fields, codes and names of individual categories of activities, i.e. sections, chapters, groups, classes, for all EU Member States.

A new version of the Classification of Economic Activities (NACE Rev. 2) will enter into force on 1 January 2025, replacing the version in force since 2008. This update reflects the changes in the economy over the last years, technological progress and the emergence of new activities. The update of the classification is important for both businesses and self-employed persons as it may affect the assignment of activity codes and the calculation of taxes.

Why it has been updated?

The economic environment has changed over the last 15 years. Several main reasons have contributed to this: digitalisation and technological advances have created new areas of activity. Climate change policies have led to changes in industry and energy. Changes in consumer behaviour have led to new trends in trade and services.

CESE - defines the different categories of activities. Some activities have become obsolete - for example, fur farming has been banned, but new activities such as cricket farming have become popular. According to Lina Kulionienė, Head of the Standards Division of the State Data Agency, the updated classification better reflects the economic areas and activities. Moreover, as the EERC is linked to the European Union and global economic classifications, its update allows for more accurate international comparability of data.

Main updates:

  1. Circular economy and ecology: new categories for renewable energy, biofuel production, waste recycling.
  2. Information technology: expanded IT, telecommunications and information services activities.
  3. Trade: retail trade will no longer be broken down by place of sale, but only by product group.
  4. Agriculture: the activity of fur farming is deleted, but the activity of insect farming, i.e. crickets, is included.

These changes will help to reflect more accurately the current economic structure and business environment.

Why it is important to change EVRK codes?

Correctly specifying the activity code is important for the following reasons:

  • Statistical reporting.
